Bud's Recording Services is a collaboration between Sam Patlove, Andrew Trube, and John Trube. Located in the former Bud's Motorcycle Shop -- an 80 year old building located a mile and a half from downtown Austin and 5 miles from the airport. After Bud passed away in 2015, John Trube purchased the compound from Bud’s family, and renovated the building into a mixed use complex incorporating the funky esthetic of the buildings. The compound hosts a restaurant, HQ for Waterloo Sparkling Water, custom jewelry & home goods, a hair salon, and office space. The studio is located in the older part of the building and still has the concrete floors and exposed trusses from the motorcycle shop.
Engineer Sam Patlove previously had a modest studio setup in a small house on East 12th Street in Austin. In the modern era of digital, Sam first learned to record all analog….something which was and is no longer taught in recording schools. What started as recording his own band, T Bird and the Breaks, led to freelancing out of local analog studios, Big Orange and EAR (East Austin Recording). Learning to work on 2” tape machines and large format consoles led to a workflow and ethos that carries on at Bud’s. A large format console, a 16 track 1” tape machine, a 1/4” 2 track tape machine, and a host of outboard gear are the anchors of Sam’s ability to make records in the classic style. Although computers have proven to be extremely powerful as audio production tools, many feel that the workflow of endless takes/tracks/options/fixes does not necessarily lead to a “better” result at the end of the day. With that said, Bud’s has full digital capabilities, and we often employ a hybrid approach, especially for mixing. Many modern records of course benefit from the full capabilities of digital, and Sam is fully versed in all the wizardry afforded by a DAW.
Andrew Trube is a songwriter, producer, and member of the band, Greyhounds. Andrew was the spark that made what started as a back porch idea with Sam into a reality and became Bud’s. Andrew and Sam first worked together on the Greyhounds song, What’s On Your Mind, in 2010. Since then Andrew has produced and brought numerous projects into Sam’s old studio, and now Bud’s, including Doyle Bramhall II, Emily Gimble, Carolyn Wonderland, Patrick Sweany, and many more.
The studio includes a lounge/kitchenette, as well as a large patio area. There are many food trucks, bars, and restaurants within walking distance on East Cesar Chavez Street. The property also has the capability to host large events with additional indoor and outdoor square footage, and onsite catering provided by Intero.
